I really want to get into good colleges... but my life is a morass. Currently, I have very little to say great bout myself but here goes:

GPA: 4.03 (going to be greater after this semester)
SAT/PSAT/ACT/SAT II: Didn't take yet... planning on taking them soon.
AP: I'm enrolled or enrolling in total of 4 APs --> I got a 5 on the US History --> taking AP Chem, Physics, and Euro Hist. this year.
ECs: I do tennis; I love chess; I'm on Science Olympiad Team at school; used to be in In-The-Know; did well in Science Fair my freshman year; did some work with a couple of good institutions; I really like the Environmental Club I'm in at school.

What are my chances of getting into top notch schools --> can't really tell yet, but what do you think? My guidance counselor talked about aiming all the way from CalTech to U of Mich to UPenn to OSU (I'm an Ohioan). I really wanted to go to Harvard back in my middle school years, but I think I'm off track for some odd reason --> I would really like Harvard though. What do you think? What colleges would like me?

May be you're a fit in Caltech, don't worry so much, if you can get into Caltech, you have very high chance getting into Harvard. Apply to universities as many as you can ... I don't know abt OSU, but it seems you have a good list of schools in your agenda.

I think you're asking the wrong question --- Don't ask "What colleges would like me?" Ask "what colleges would I like?" Sit down and draw up a list of the things you are looking for beyond "prestige" - do you want large, small, mid-sized, will financial aid be an issue, do you have a preference in terms of location, do you want a school focused just on technical subjects or one where you have a broad range of things to choose from, would a university or a liberal arts college suit your style of learning best?, what type of social life would you like, do you want to study abroad, do you like the idea of a huge greek party scene, would you consider yourself to be liberal, conservative or middle of the road, etc. etc.

Answer these questions, take your SATs, and then sit down again with your guidance counselor (or ask here) with some specifics about what you are looking for BEYOND prestige.

There are over 3500 schools in the U.S. They are all different. You will hopefully have a shot at most of them. Why wouldn't you want to think a bit about where you would be happiest spending four years of your life and $140,000-plus?
