Hi. I'm looking into getting into Journalism so I'm thinking English and/or Poly Sci may be a good base for me to jump into Graduate school. I'm a Junior right now, too.

My GPA is a 4.01 (for reference, tops in class is 4.6 but I'm still in top 10% due to small class). GPA is low mainly due to a handful of classes, mainly an extra Math class I was convinced into taking by a Math teacher that murdered me in the 1st semester and ailing grades in AP Physics and AP Psychology (should be my easiest but wound up with mid 80s).

Have not taken SATs yet but my PSAT was Math: 800 English: 730 Writing: 730. I plan on taking my SAT in May and SAT IIs during this summer, too. Class Officer, part of Prom Committee, NHS member, Beta club member, and National Latin Exam medalist in all my years. There are a couple other random awards, mainly for math.

At any rate, what colleges should I be looking at? I hear UNC Chapel Hill is a good choice but I'd like to see other ones. Thanks ahead of time.

Bowdoin, Carleton, U Chicago, Colby, Colgate, Cornell, Dartmouth, Davidson, U Virginia, Tufts, U Rochester, Northwestern, Middlebury, Macalester, Kenyon, U of Iowa, Berkeley, Haverford, Hamilton, Emory, Duke, Colgate, Columbia, Georgetown, Grinnell, Swarthmore, Wesleyan

for journalism: UCLA, U Illinois C-U, Macalester, U Michigan, UNC, Nwestern, USC, Syracuse, U Wisconsin

If I was looking into Sports Journalism, should I major in something different? If that's the case, would the same colleges be good to look at?

Or should I just go to Bristol University? haha...

Thanks.

Syracuse is awesome for sports journalism with many successful sports journalists as alumni. I'd also say any of the big ten colleges where you could write for the student paper would be fine. If you go strictly for a journalism program, make sure to check its facilities and the opportunities for internships. Also look to see how many faculty members actually have journalism experience. And, find a school that emphasizes "real world" skills not theory. Schools like UCLA do not.
Good luck.

Taylawn, I recommend you look in Northwestern for sure. They have the best journalism department in the nation and their English and Political Science departments are respected.

I also recommend the University of Michigan. They have one of the three or fourth best athletics programs and the schools newspaper covers the stories religiously. Furthermore, Michigan is arguably #1 in Political science.

Then there is UNC-Chapel Hill, and you probably alreayd know about them.

Finally, I recommend Syracuse. It has a great Journalism program and good sports coverage.

For Sports Journalism, you undoubtedly want to look at Syracuse and Northwestern, those are consistently the top two (and only two) mentioned as top sports journalism schools.
really though, and Big Ten, Pac 10 or ACC school with a J school will do.
Important qualities you want to look for: daily newspaper, alumni connections (i.e. syracuse has marv albert and a host of others), internship opportunities (if you want to get into journalism you NEED to intern (at northwestern, you are required to intern for a whole semester a major TV station, radio station, magazine or newspaper, so they make this incredibly easy to arrange)) and finally, a sports team that you can get behind and support (northwestern's wildcats have lagged in this in the past few years, but their basketball team ALMOST made the dance this year, if they had, it would have been a first, and the football team program is improving)
Also look at Iowa (great journalism, daily newspaper, great team, intern opportunities, things like a radio and TV station on campus).. I applied to Iowa even though its not well ranked because of all these programs, that, and with your stats, tehyll give you a cartload of money... for me, the cost to go there, if i went there, would be the same as in-state for a UC, because of scholarships

U of R Poli Sci is highly regarded, check it out.

Also I've heard Cornell is excellent as well.

Johns Hopkins is the **** 4 poli sci...but for journalism Columbia!

Thank you for all your responses. I'll be sure to look into all those.
