What constitutes a girlfriend?

I know this question might seem weird, but when does a girl move up to girlfriend status?

Is it when you're dating each other? or passed the dating stage?

Sorry about the odd question, but I wasn't too sure.

i'd say... when you both talk things out and decide you're bf/gf.

nothing more awkward than one person saying the other is their friend, when they think they're more, or that they're their significant other, when they've never thought about it that way.

so i'd say it differs depending on who's involved xD

A girl moves up to girlfriend status by her choosing.

Most guys wish they could control this. Too bad girls are so blind as to realize the guy is a great guy. Instead, the girl opts for alcoholic guys that go to community college.

Woah, bitter much? Who says the girl has to be the one doing the choosing? That kind of mind set is what turns girls, at least hot ones who "think" they're untouchable, away from most guys. Everyone knows that most people, especially chicks (sorry ladies, I just call em how I see em) want things they can't have, So they're attracted to guys who pulls a ton of chicks, becuase they KNOW that the dude is the one doing the picking.

As for when you know that a girl is your girlfriend, when the two of you stop seeing other people and become exclusive, and she'll let you know if thats what she wants.

When she's the only one you're hooking up with.

when you list yourself as "In a Relationship" with her on Facebook.

Yeah, it's kinda a grey area sometimes, but I agree with what other people have said about being exclusive. When each of you is only dating eachother & nobody else... then you're bf/gf. It also helps if you've had a few dates first on a fairly regular basis (rather than just 1, or a few dates spread out over a couple months).
If you want to test the waters, you can call her your girlfriend when she's around & see her reaction. My boyfriend did that to me.. his friend called him on his cell, he answered & when asked where he was, he replied he was "At his girlfriend's"

ide say when she wants to hold hands...and not stupid hand holding but like, interdigitation (finger locking). It is important that she is the one wanting to hold your hand (to be a girlfriend officially). You cant just grab it like its yours, she has to give it to you.

when shes willing to kiss you..and im not talking about a peck on the cheek. most girls dont kiss a guy on the lips unless hes done something really really amazing..or unless they're very drunk.

I think you can only be sure of the boyfriend/girlfriend status when you've actually talked it out and decided it together.

You can have all the boyfriend/girlfriend type things going on and still not be at that status...and it really sucks when you work up the nerve to finally just be blunt and ask about it and it turns out differently than all the signs pointed to how it would. So yeah, only after you've actually talked about it and figured out where both of you stand.

"when you list yourself as "In a Relationship" with her on Facebook."

Survey says, bing.

^^ i dunno, i actually know a girl who said she's female but didnt' say what shes interested in and said she was in a relationship with another girl and i thought she was a lesbian for a while, turns out i was wrong...or was i?

hahaha possibly.

Or maybe she swings from both sides of the plate? Which has the potential to be awesome for any dude she may be interested in.
