What constitutes "legacy?"

One of my good friends applied, and her dad went to its Med. School.

I know at a lot of schools, legacy=undergrad. What's the deal with Columbia?

Under legacy programs, applicants are given an advantage if their parents or grandparents attended the school.

[from the Columbia website ]

Does Columbia give preference in the admission process to applicants whose parents attended Columbia?

We are always pleased to received applications from students whose family members have graduated from Columbia. When an applicant is extremely competitive and compares favorably with other similarly talented candidates, being the daughter or son of a Columbia graduate may be an advantage in the admission process. This advantage may especially apply for “legacy” candidates. Please note: you are only considered a “legacy” candidate if you are the child of an undergraduate alumnus/a of Columbia College or of The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science.
