I have applied ED to Dartmouth, but also love Brown. I will definitely apply to B should D not come through.

I am curious. My granddad is an alum (a loyal, but impecunious one). Do I count as a legacy??

Thanks!

I believe Michelle Hernandez in her book A for Admission says that only parents count as legacies at Dartmouth; however she has not worked there for several years. I couldn't find anything on how legacy is defined at Brown.

Thanks Muffy333,

He's a Brown alum (for clarification).

Parents and siblings are considered legacy. If your grandfather were a particularly active or generous alum, that might help.

Every college has its own definition of legacy, btw.

legacy or not, I think there will be a place to put any relations on the app

My brother goes to Brown currently and he asked the admissions office about this. Verdict: Brown DOES consider siblings as legacy (and it's even better if they are thriving at Brown) but they do not give a whole lot of extra weight to legacy applicants in general, as some other schools tend to do.

peachie, ask your brother about grandparents!
I know the ED rate was 36% for "legacies" last year

yes. parents and grandparents are considered legacy as well.
I'm sure it helps if they've donated a building or something, but regular alum relations get a little boost too.

and WOW! 36% ??? that's so many! Where did you get that statistic?

Look on the website under Alumni - there is some kind of service for college counseling legacies and there is a section about applying to Brown. I tried to put the link here but messed up. 46% of legacies admitted ED class of '09, 39% admitted ED class of '10. I think I saw '11 ED statistics somewhere and it was 36% but can't find it now.
