What Counts as a Legacy?

I am very unclear as to how closely related a person must be in order to be considered a legacy. Would an uncle count? Also, are business or law school legacies relevant for undergraduate admissions?

my understanding is that it really needs to be a parent for it to have a significant impact although i guess legacy includes all familial relationships to the alumni -- if i were you and i had an uncle or something who went to the school, i would just have him write a letter on your behalf, and call the school to see if that counts technically as 'legacy'

your parents for undergrad is most significant i think maybe grad, maybe grandparents a little bit.

It depends on the school and, given that, the school may or may not consider it.

What does the application ask? Some ask if a parent went to the school. Others ask if any family member went to the school. Whatever the application asks will give you an idea of what the school considers important.

It depends on how much money your relative has given to the school. :D

each school varies

Do public institutions like the UCs have "legacy" systems?
