What counts as academically qualified for MIT?

I think that people with high rank generally are people with higher GPA, more rigorous courses, and higher scores…I don’t think it is rank in as much as the things people do that end up factoring into rank.

rank qua rank is not considered in our process, however, as concernedrabbit says, it is often (though not always) the case that the strongest students have, as a byproduct of that strength, a reasonably high rank. in other words, the rank is a result, and not a reason.

But it’s going to take more than scores (and rank.) Kids who don’t have an idea what that “more” is are likely shooting in the dark. Not good strategy for any most-competitive school.

In regards to having a hook like a few of you said, would you say that having good relations with a coach and/or being a possible recruit would be one? I know coaches can send letters of support, but how heavily are they weighed in the admissions process?
