What counts as an academic awards?

I know there's a spot on the common app that asks for a list of academic honors. I don't have anything special that is obviously academic (Intel, USAMO) but I have several awards from extracurriculars that can be considered academic (Youth & Government, Mock Trial). Would these count?

Academic awards don’t have to be at the international or national level, they can be school specific. I think there’s a place to check whether the honor/award was school, regional, state, national, or international.

So items like making the honor roll at your school could also be entered.

I’m pretty sure awards earned through extra-curricular activities also count as academic.

You can definitely put in school-level awards, but it’s best to list awards in order of “prestige.” In other words, I would most probably list any state/national/international awards before school/chapter awards.

I just looked at the Common App - the section is called Honors. It says:

You select radio buttons to designate at what grade level(s) the honor was received, and also select the highest level of recognition between the following four categories: School, State or Regional, National, International. There are only 5 lines, so you would want to feature your highest level awards.

If we have non-academic awards (e.g. music or civic service), should we list that in “additional information”?

^ you also can place your honors/awards in EC place.

My school has an award at the end of the year where every student who had a 92+ accumulative average for the year gets a plaque. Does this count? It’s called the “Principals List Award”?

Yes it would count, but if you have enough awards to fill that section, then it would be best to leave that award out.

You may want to leave GPA/honor roll awards aside. The college is already going to know that you have such-and-such GPA. It’s best to save the awards section for other stuff. I didn’t even mention high honor roll anywhere in my college applications.

So the debate/mock trial/statesman awards would count? they are regional/state level, but i’m not sure if they qualify as academic

What about someone who has won multiple awards in a single activity, such as Model UN or Speech/Debate? There isn’t room to list each one separately.

@yoamogatos, list the most important one(s). For example, it’s better off to simply list a national award than to separately list all the awards earned in qualifying regional/state competitions.

@shyams I would still list them.
