I’m currently a senior. I haven’t done many extracurricular activities during high school except for volunteering at an elementary school library for about two hours a week during 11th and 12th grade. I draw or paint around 12 hours a week, and have been since middle school, but do it at home, and haven’t won any awards or anything. Would something like this count as an extracurricular activity?
Certainly the volunteering at the elementary school is an EC. I would classify the painting/drawing as a hobby not an EC since there is no structure to what you are doing – you don’t have a definite weekly commitment, it doesn’t sound like you have taken art classes outside of school to improve/learn new techniques, and you haven’t entered shows to have your work judged etc. Therefore, I would not include the drawing/painting as an EC on my college application. If it is hugely important to you, it can be a topic for an essay or something like that. Others may have different opinions.
