what counts as asian/pacific islander?

ok my grandfather was from the philippines. does this count as asian/pacific islander? also what is officially hispanic, because he was a native spanish speaker b/c of the whole spanish colonization thing. other nations that were colonized by spaniards are considered hispanic, but the philippines would be stretching it right?

Philipino definitely qualifies as Asian, but are you just 1/4 Philipino? If you're 3/4 white or something, then put white, most schools are over-represented by Asians anyway.

Filipinos are considered Asian/Pac. Islander in spite of the Spanish heritage from colonization. Most Filipinos do not speak spanish fluently. And yes, Filipinos are included as over-represented Asians/Pac. Islanders on college campuses.

IMHO, Fillipinos should be characterized by their skin color. The majority of us tend to range from a dark brown to an almost burnt blackish color. I myself fall on the later end of the spectrum so I consider myself black. On my college apps, I will put that I am black because it IS the ethnicity I most closely identify with because I am mistaken as African American so often.

In keeping with this, I think the issue of ethnicity is closely related to the idea of sexual orientation. You are whatever you identify yourself with. I mean no one will dispute if you claim you are gay or not, so why should someone try going about validating whether you are black or not.

So I guess dark Indians are also African American?

futurewhartonman,

For a supposed future Wharton matriculant, your reading comprehension skills are vastly inadequate.

I said ethnicity like sexual orientation is whatever you identify yourself with. Therefore, if a indian identifies with the black culture, then he is black. There should be no disagreement there. I mean most people identify themselves as the collective term 'white' but truely they are not. They are different lineages of various European ancestries.

I'm pretty sure colleges will disagree when they invite you to the African American meetup and see you are Asian and your only excuse is "Oh yea I identify myself with Black". Good luck buddy.

For a future college applicant, you're highly immoral and unethical.

I guess if Kaavya V. "identified" herself as black coming from a rich Indian family that paid 20k for a college tutor and everything wow we can all go to Harvard and plagiarize 'cause ALL questions and situations can be modified to our own personal goals.

I'm sure Yale/Stanford would love a kid like you.

"I'm pretty sure colleges will disagree when they invite you to the African American meetup and see you are Asian and your only excuse is "Oh yea I identify myself with Black". Good luck buddy."

That's a bit racist. I know most of my Fillipino friends DO NOT consider themselves Asian. FYI, the Phillipines is not on the mainland continent of Asia nor close like Japan. We are in the Pacific Islands and so thats what most of my friends prefer to be referred to as. I myself prefer to identify with black culture AND there is absolutly nothing wrong with this practice. It is akin to the situation where an adopted white child is raised in an American Asian family. Would it be wrong to identify himself as Chinese, Japanese etc when clearly he is indoctrinated into their way of life.

Clearly you are the immoral one; ethnicity boils down to more than just outward appearences.

"I'm sure Yale/Stanford would love a kid like you."

heh, random ad hominem on two of America's finest universities. I love it.

I'm not talking about ONLY Filipinos. I'm talking about you thinking it is okay for any race including Asian, Whites, and anyone else to identify themselves as a minority such as African American just because they feel like it.

"We are in the Pacific Island"
YEA YOU ARE A PACIFIC ISLANDER SO MARK THAT BOX, IT'S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE.

"It is akin to the situation where an adopted white child is raised in an American Asian family."

It is not akin at all and you're not adopted. OH MY GOD LOOK I'M ASIAN AND I GREW UP IN ATLANTA SO I AM BLACK NOW. ACCEPT ME TO HARVARD NOW YAY I'M SO LUCKY.

You're obviously trying to weasel your way out and are trying to find a justification for being unethical so i'm not gonna talk to you anymore.

To each his own, I guess. And I'm not going to have anyone tell me I'm not black (most certainly as the college app season fast approaches)...

Best Regards, WhartonMan.

Technically, Filipinos are asians, but do colleges consider them as URMs or model minorities (e.g. Japanese, Chinese, Indians, etc.)?

I like that term RPDad ("model minorities"); it sounds better than ORM. I think colleges do not consider Filipinos URMs, which is unfortunate because there isn't a great deal of Filipinos in college. Filipinos aren't the most disadvantaged or underrepresented Asians/Pacific Islanders in college, take Cambodians for example.

"Technically, Filipinos are asians, but do colleges consider them as URMs or model minorities (e.g. Japanese, Chinese, Indians, etc.)?"

RPDad, Fillipinos are technically anything. You are not talking about clasifying computer chips you are talking about a wide array of people with different cultural and ethnic identifications.

lol, skin color is completely irrelevant nowadays. race does not equal skin color. because you look black doesn't mean you can mark that.

im a mixed child, but when i was a kid, i was identified as white a lot of times. i still get sunburnt.

put asian, and then under nationality, mark Fillipino.

With all do respect, saroah who are you to tell me what nationality I am? Next thing you know you'll be ordering me to call myself as gay or transgender!

and FOR THE LAST TIME, Fillipinos are not in ASIA.

All of you people are failing to understand that the concept of ethnicity is more fluid than we have grown up to expect. Thats why you cannot apply rigid social conventions when asking someone to identify their ethnicity. Case closed.

whoa, it was just a suggestion. put black then, no need to get angry.

Just 1 curious question. Have you marked black on all of your papers since you were a kid?

u guys are retarded

urmnigga is clearly justified in identifying himself as black because he is often mistaken for black and is therefore treated as black. also, black filipinos look a LOT more african american than do dark indians. just fyi. pacific islanders actually do look a lot more black, and their average socioeconomic level is more like that of blacks than that of asians.

hehe, sorry I just get passionate about these sorts of things. Since sophomore year when I've begun applying for scholarships and stuff, I have put down that I was black. Prior to that, I believe my parents marked me off in the Pacific Islander category.

^^
Solve your problem by filling in Filipino onto your applications. Most have an other please specify box. Don't put black/african american because that means you are of african descent. That's morally wrong and unfair to other applicants.
