What counts as BME?

I would like to study Psychiatry and become a Psychiatrist, but as im new to this, I’m not quite familiar with what type of major that would be. Would that fit as BME?

Thanks for any clarification questions!

No, biomedical engineering is an engineering major. Most BMEs go on to become engineers, not doctors (though there are some that do). That would be more of creating medical devices and working with medical technology.

You won’t be able to get into studying psychiatry until you’re in medical school. So in college, you should just study something that you’re interested in.

The brain-related majors at Hopkins are:

  • [] Neuroscience (the study of the brain, most scientific of the options)
    [
] Cognitive science (the study of how we learn and process information, overlaps with linguistics, philosophy, and computer science as well as neuro and psych)
[] Behavioral Biology (the study of human behavior, overlaps with the study of evolution and animal behavior)
    [
] Psychology (the study of the mind and emotions, and the broadest major)

I think the closest that you’ll get to psychiatry is Psychology because you’ll have the opportunity to take courses on abnormal psychology, the study of mental illness (though you don’t have to be a Psych major to take that course). There are also some Neuro classes that might catch your eye, like Psychopharmacology (looking at the effects of drugs on the brain).
