I am just wondering if this counts as my parent being employed by Yale. My mom was a fellow at Yale-New Haven Hospital for one year. I know this is a big stretch, so I was just hoping that someone could clarify what I should put for this.
It sounds like it counts to me as YNH is part of Yale. I don’t think it is a stretch since she was a Yale employee. I’m not sure if it will make a difference but I would list it. IIRC the common app will ask for dates of employment.
The fact that she was a one-time employee there won’t be a factor for your undergrad candidacy. If she were a current employee, it might be something. If she were a current faculty member, it would mean something.
@canoe2015 @T26E4 thanks for your responses! On the common app, it just asks for if she was employed. It only asks for more information if the relatives that were employed were NOT listed under the family section of the common app. So because she was, I can’t elaborate further on her history there. Because I can’t do that, I was just worried that simply checking “yes” might not be completely true.
Seems she had no continuing relationship with Yale, as an alum or current employee, no allegiance. So even if you mention it in Addl Info, their reaction may be muted.
Doesn’t the Common App ask if one IS employed, not the work history?
@Motodile that makes sense - since she’s your mom the common app asks elsewhere, I believe, if she’s currently employed and if so where. If it were a relative other than your parents, that’s where, IIRC, it would ask for additional detail.
I agree with others that it’s not likely to be a significant factor, but it won’t hurt and who knows, it might help a little - so no reason not to mention it that I can see.
Yale New Haven Is a private hospital and not owned by Yale university. Employees are paid by the hospital, not Yale.
The hospital has a long standing affiliation with the Yale medical school. But being a fellow at YNH doesnt mean the same as being an employee at Yale.
