What counts as first generation?

My mother attended college for 1 or 2 years in India, but then had to drop out because her father died.

My father attended Emory for 1 or 2 years, but also had to drop out because of his financial situation.

Would I be a first generation college student if my parents attended college but have not graduated?

I would think not.

It really doesn’t matter what we think. Each college decides what qualifies for first gen. You will state on your app what education your parents had and the school will decide if you get that tip factor.

The most common definition I have encountered is that first generation means neither parent has a 4 year college degree; however, it is true that each college or scholarship program can set its own definition.

I’ve also heard first gen as neither parent having beyond a high school education (ex. never went to a college at all). Agree, that you should put the information down and let each college decide.

I’d just put it and if someone looks into it, you can provide your argument.

If you’re really worried about it, you can call up your gc / college counselor / admissions office at whatever college and ask them about it. I’m sure they would have definitive answers on what constitutes
