What counts as four years of foreign language?

I know that taking one language for four years (French I-French IV) is four years, but does taking two years of French and two years of another language (Latin) count as four?

You technically have four years of a foreign language, however, when colleges state that they want four years of a foreign language, they mean four years of the same language, as its meant to compel students to develop somewhat of a proficiency in the language.

A student who had taken Italian I, French I, Latin I, and Spanish I hasn’t really gained any footing in any of the languages they had taken, so in reality, its kind of in vain.

Ah, I see. Thank you.

Seeing as how they don’t offer French IV at my school, would taking French up to III and Latin I look good?

I can also speak Bengali, Hindi, and Urdu fluently (can’t read any, though.) Can I put that on my application?

Yes you most definitely can

If you can demonstrate proficiency in French some other way (AP exam, test at the college, etc.) you’d probably be fine with 3 years. If you write down “I speak French, Bengali, Hindi and Urdu,” on your applications, be prepared to prove it to them at some point later.
