What counts as 'undergrad' when applying to internships?

I'm a senior in high school and will be going to a 4-year college (or maybe 5... Northeastern...) next year. My parents are starting to bug me about getting a good job or a paid internship for the summer, but there is VERY little in this area that I can find. It's all unpaid, or for minority students, or for people at least at an undergraduate level (it seems like graduate is more common). Because the internship would be over the summer, and I'll be a rising freshman, will I count as a college student? Or would I still be a high-schooler?

I'm really not sure about this, but the number of things I could apply to would rise significantly if I would count as an undergrad, so I guess it's worth asking. If it makes any difference, most of the internship opportunities I can find are with the government.

(If there are other opportunities I should be looking at, please let me know... only I live right next to a university anyway, so I have to compete with college students for jobs in the immediate area. It'd be a lot easier to just metro into DC for an internship.)

You probably won’t be able to get any internships as a Freshman and maybe even as a Sophomore. I seriously doubt you’ll be able to get one having just graduated high school. If you are, it’ll most likely be unpaid.

EDIT: In response to your question, you aren’t really in college, nor are you in high school. You’re in a grey area.

I know friends who’ve gotten internships over the summer- no connections, so far as I know- and were paid some very nice money, so I’m really not sure how valid that is.

Thanks, though.
