Living at Cal 2011-2012, UC Berkeley Housing
This page says January 12th, which obviously refers to the past semester. Does anyone know the move in date for the fall semester? We would like to schedule our flight.

(I won't be able to attend CalSO during the summer, and so if they offer any information there I won't receive it.)

You will be sent a link to the move-in page, with lots of advice and all the logistics answers including dates. Has nothing to do with CalSO attendance, you will get everything that any other incoming student gets.

The answer for the date depends on what unit and type of room you have. Those in triples and quads in every unit except Bowles will move in on Saturday August 20th. The remaining students (singles, doubles and all Bowles) cannot move in until the 21st (Sunday). If you arrive on campus earlier, you will need to arrange for a place to stay until your movein date (e.g. hotel or friends dorm room). You can arrive later than the move-in day appointments, but as the first day of classes is August 25th, get to campus before that date. Almost all incoming students arrive on their assigned move-in day. That day and the next few are precious time to make new friends and learn your way around.

Just to make sure, is it always the saturday date that is designated for unit triples move in? They have not confirmed this on the website so I want to make sure before I make my plans for move in.

all I can tell you is that it has been that way for a number of years. All single and double rooms move in on Sunday, plus all students in Bowles. Every other type of room has been assigned to Saturday.

The dates are confirmed - August 20 and 21 - but I can’t find anything that authoritatively states that the usual pattern will be continued. On the other hand, there are no hints that it will be different this year. Since this practice roughly allots half the incoming students to each day, any other scheme would need to accomplish about the same partition into halves. The halls hold about 5,580 students in total, but some of those are continuing students, who may choose to avoid the congestion on move in days.

Yes, I just came back from the last CalSO and those are the correct dates (the 20th and 21st). I can’t imagine the craziness that goes on during those two days…

yes, but the big question for each incoming student is WHICH date of the two is for you. Still not announced.

it is crazy - huge lines snaking around the property of students and their families waiting to check in, giant piles of personal goods towering next to them. A chaos inside the units waiting for the elevators to get your cart of possessions up to your floor, plus a bidirectional line snaking up and down the staircase for those going back down and those who want to carry stuff up the stairs to beat the wait.

Jammed rooms as people maneuver carts and possessions trying to get things settled in.

Confusion and unfamiliarity, but comforting when you find that there are a few thousand in exactly the same situation, willing to walk together to look around, get meals and just meet folks. Great time to meet people.
