What department is good at Duke?

What is Duke know for in the real world? What departments at Duke are top and world renowned?

BME is ranked #2 in the US (last time I checked ~1 year ago)

According to the NRC rankings,

Anthropology #19
Classics #15
Biochemistry #15
Biomedical Engineering #4
Cellular Biology #13
Ecology/Evolution #3
English #6
French #3
History #15
Literature #2
Molecular Biology #15
Neuroscience #16
Oceanography #14
Political Science #14
Religion #4
Sociology #20
Spanish #2

These rankings were done in 1995, however, and Duke will probably fare much better in the new rankings due to be released in late 2007.

Duke is still 2nd for BME (Biomedical Engineering) according to US News:

http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/brief/enps02_brief.php

Why is Duke ranked so high in the overall ranking when school like University of Illinois and University of michigan have more faculties ranked in the top 10?

the rankings are based on more factors than just the faculty and academic standing.

Endowment, alumni produced, employment for graduates, starting salary of graduates, extra curriculars provided, campus, location, foundation date etc. also pay a very big part of the rankings.

That is why Duke is higher ranked than both UIUC and UMich

Just for my input.. I'd like to say that Duke probably doesn't have any poor or even mediocre departments.

While the Chemistry department is very good, personally I'm not a big fan of the professors I have come into contact with.

Spanish #2? From what I've already seen and heard the spanish department isn't strong at all.

those rankings were from 1995...a lot can happen in 12 years.

i know their literature department is #1?

Duke is fairly strong in science and engineering. It's generally stronger in humanty and biological science.

1995 NRC ranking in science and engineering fields for Duke:

Engineering:
mechanical engineering #42
material #50
Industrial Engineering ?
electrical engineering #55
civil engineering #27
Chemical engineering ?
biomedical engineering #4
aerospace (not ranked)

physical science:
math #34
physics #42
computer science #28
geoscience #41
chemistry #42

I think all of Duke's engineering fields are now in the top 25 (according to one of the rankings). Thats what it said in the packet we got at the start of this semester.

what's NRC ranking?? any link???

NRC is the National Research Council, part of the National Science Foundation. The last rankings were done in 1995, and new rankings will be out late this year. The 2007 rankings will include new programs like American Studies, Statistics, Communication, and Plant Sciences.
