<p>Hey, i need your advice. i really like W&M, and would like to major in econ. And just found Mason School of Business(Undergrad) got a pretty rank in Business Week. But how abt econ? I know econ is in the college (but not in Mason).</p>
<p>IMO, liberal-art-like school is really to my taste, but i found that there not many course to choose from in LAC(they r just too tiny IMO). Sooooo, I tried to found schools with modest class size and offer many courses. And i found maybe Williams and Mary will be my best choice, a pretty good national university with a liberal atmosphere.</p>
<p>But I still a bit puzzled. Just have no ideas abt it, say, professors, strong dept, opportunities, and greek life? Could current students talk more abt it? </p>
<p>Another question, is W&M a career orintated school or gradschool orintaed school?</p>
<p>My only experience in W&M econ was a freshman 101 course which I found to be very well done. I have a friend who is an econ major and he has been very happy with his courses in department as well.</p>
<p>Obviously, history is pretty strong at W&M. I don't know too much about the humanities side of things though as I'm a chemistry major. I've been very happy with the sciences (especially with the new science building almost finished).</p>
<p>I'd recommend going through some of the websites of the individual departments to get some more information about each of them. From my personal experience, I'd have a hard time pointing at one department and saying it is weak.</p>
<p>In regards to career vs graduate... I think there's some statistic that they say something like ~50% go on right away to grad school and within 20 years it's up to ~70%. I'm not sure on those numbers, but that's what I remember from a tour.</p>
<p>Hey Meesh. I'll try to break down what I like about the department into a few sections.</p>
<p>Professors: At W&M it seems that most professors are there for the students. I find this especially evident in my chem classes. Obviously they're all extremely knowledgeable, but they make a point of being approachable and helpful. I've sent chem profs e-mails to get responses a few minutes later. Most of the professors have weekly review sessions that they teach in the evening. In my chem classes it usually seems that most of the students enjoy the class (this can't be said about every class) and this is usually because of the style of the professor.</p>
<p>The one slight downside has been the facilities. The current Chem building (Rogers Hall - incidentally named after the founder of MIT who was a W&M grad and W&M chem prof) is quite possibly the worst building on campus in both looks and disrepair (sometimes smell... but the bio building can usually beat it there). This is all about to change though since the massive new Bio/Chem building is about to open this spring. Rogers will be renovated, and the Psych department will move there.</p>

<p>The economics department is fairly good. It just depends on what you're looking for I suppose. The business school's quality is relatively questionable, though it seems to be improving.</p>
<p>Undergrad business school is ranked pretty well, although how wise it is to get a BBA without minoring or majoring in something else... that's a whole separate debate. The graduate business school isn't quite as highly ranked as the undergrad program.</p>
<p>To javabytes87: i thought Mason grad is better than its BBA program. it seems that i've made a mistake :DDDDDDD

It seems the college's better the Mason undergrad in job placement, right? i really like the liberal atomsphere, could talk more abt the diff between econ at college and Mason undergrad school?</p>
