I'm going to be a sophomore next year and I feel like I'm wasting my summer. I've read one book (1984 by George Orwell), and played some tennis. That's it. I'm taking 5 AP's next year so I don't see the point in taking a class over summer. I might next summer though at a local college.

What did you do the summer before 10th grade? Traveling? Anything productive?

AP Human Geography

PreIB Spanish II

AP English Language and Composition

AP US Government and Politics

AP Physics B

PreIB Chemistry

AP Calculus AB

All of the APs are required except for Human Geography

I went to a performing arts (majoring in ballet) camp for two weeks and went out west for the first time to see Mt. Rushmore. It was really interesting and fun. Sometimes the best lessons don’t have to be taught in a like a summer class or a book!

Took golf lessons, got up to tournament level skill. Broke my wrist in September, still had the skill to make the school team, learned they practice everyday, declined to join. Not exactly the story of my summer, but more the story of why golf is now a hobby…

I have quite a bit of summer reading (5 novels) to do yet, and write a 10 page (minimum) paper connecting them all, all for the first day of my Hon. Am. Lit class.

I also cycle a lot daily and partake in fundraising bike rides and semi competitive biking events.

I also did a 120 page research project and read 2 novels for class and maby for enjoyment. Read The Scarlet Letter in a day, the day before school(:

I went on vacation and then as soon as we got back i had to go to the state ffa convention for another week then after that i remember reading a lot of books and trying to hang out with my friends as much as i could untill school started back.

@Tenors: Oh, no, I didn’t build it from scratch. I took old parts of different guitars and new stuff and put them together, but I did the sanding, painting, carving of the headstock, stringing, some work on the pick-ups and finishing work with a little help from my neighbor who offered some of his tools and advice.

@ the OP: Check in to see if there is a local volunteer office or program you can get into. I’ve gotten a lot of random opportunities to get service hours in the short-term and long-term because I registered with mine. Good luck! Don’t kill yourself in the summer. It’s meant to be down-time.

Oh yea, I forgot to mention I volunteer at the hospital twice a week. I ordered a tennis ball machine which should be arriving in early July, so then I will be playing a lot more tennis. Here’s my potential list of summer activities:

Read 5 classic lit novels

Volunteer at hospital

Bahamas cruise (already booked)

hang out with friends

play a lot of tennis (hopefully 1-2 hrs. per day)

running, exercising, building forearm muscle

cooking

Does that sound productive at all? My school doesn’t start until August 23rd so I still have a while. My interests are tennis, exercising, and reading. I want to be a doctor. I also like debate. I wanted to go to a debate camp or tennis camp but because my parents spent so much money on the ball machine and we’re also buying a house. So I can’t exactly go to camp because of the financial issues.

That looks pretty productive. I would just say that you should do lots of stuff. I wasted most of my high school summers. I wish I read more, volunteered more, and was more social, so you look like you’re on a good track.
