Some of you have already dropped off DS or DD for their first year at college. What did you haul all the way there just to bring back with you on the return trip?

The Sterlite drawer unit and the laundry hamper on wheels that holds 3 loads. There was not enough floor space for either of them.

Nothing. Her single room is smaller than 90 square ft. We loaded up the mini van we rented to bring her up. We bought more stuff when we got there. We are bringing more stuff up in 3 weeks. We are going to build a loft for her soon. This is the interesting part - her room in our house is still full of stuff.

Year two: No room for last year's underbed storage trays. The dresser and laundry hampers are under the bed this year.

Wastepaper baskets. I was pretty sure we wouldn't need them, and I wanted them for myself anyway. :) My kid got put in one of the apartment buildings it's a bit of a walk from campus, but the room is HUGE - there was room for lots more stuff. We could have put in lots more furniture, but all we ended up adding was a bookcase.

A shirt with a 15 1/2 inch neck (I thought it said 16 1/2) and a packet of plastic shower curtain rings.

I am going blind.

The things she forgot to take out of the suitcase :) it was crazy during move in and although they were efficient, it was still a race to get her unpacked and get the suitcases ready to go back with us. We missed a pocket on one of them. Now we get to ship it back.

I'm almost embarrassed to say I brought back a mattress cover. I bought it online to zip over the mattress to protect it from bed bugs or general yuckiness of a used mattress, but when we went to pack up I couldn't find it. I looked everywhere, but it was nowhere to be found.

Come move-in I performed my motherly obligation of making the bed for my son while he unpacked his stuff. His bed is lofted and it was no small feat to make it! I'm up there pulling and tucking; adding a featherbed and mattress pad over it, sheets, comforter, WHEW! I come to find out that when we unpack a previously packed box, lo and behold -- the mattress cover! There was NO way I was going to unmake all the layers on the lofted bed that I struggled to get on to put the mattress cover on first and redo all of the other layers! Fortuitously, we found out that the dorms got all new mattresses before school this year!

So now we have the first item for younger son (a current junior) for his future dorm room. If we can find it by then!

Nothing. The list that was posted on this website was helpful. She is actually asking for a few more items left behind.

A set of storage cubes that didn't fit anywhere!

"His bed is lofted and it was no small feat to make it! I'm up there pulling and tucking;"

A little off topic - those who have not made up the loft yet, take the mattress down off the bed and put on the topper, mattress cover, pad and fitted sheet. Then toss it back up to do the top sheet and comforter. Sent DD up to do that part. Works much better :)

Now you tell me! :)

Last year we brought back a large lounge pillow I had made (the fleece stretched and it ended up pretty big when stuffed, but nice, I thought); the following weekend we were going there and that pillow was requested (this summer he declined the offer to resize it)- the first trip put it in my rear view mirror sight the whole trip. He also decided he did not like the fluorescent bulb desk lamp from home (it was there all summer, we had several in use) and we made a store trip for a new one. Son made his own bed, after we left- we unloaded the car, using his bed for a place to put things and let him decide how to do things (we had a one hour close by parking permit and they also had dorm helpers for any lofting, furniture assembly questions). This year he will know what he wants/needs and I will be less tempted to add things I think he should have..

Didn't bring home any "things" actually----the info I got from reading multiple posters' suggestions about what to take and not take was an enormous help---many thanks to ALL of you!

I was talking to a Mom in DS's apt bdg, and mentioned CC for some reason---she'd never "been here". She's going to check it out bkz I told her what a wonderfully informative and supportive site it is.

I DID come home with tear-stained cheeks (managed to get out of his sight first!) ;) and a heart full of pride!
