I submitted a code excerpt of an app I am making on right now
Just put out this http://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/iss040e065887.jpg. Goes really well with the school work I’ve been doing and the fact that I live close to JSC (Johnson Space Center)
I put a picture of a golden retriever puppy. 
I scanned a collage I made from 60s inspired magazine pages. I have collages like these covering the furniture in my room. My perspectives essay mentioned my interest in vintage clothing (among other things), so I think it tied in nicely with the rest of my application.

lol I felt lame putting that image of the auroras. It all depends on the person I guess; If it kind of shows your personality I think you’re fine.
No worries, I put something pretty lame too haha. I’m applying as a history major so hopefully they won’t judge me too hard.

I can’t load the photo right now (will later), but my son’s was a cool picture of the chemistry experiment he performed. It was right after the “explosion”.
I put a picture of a specific type of cell called owls eye cells. Seeing them is necessarily for the diagnosis of a certain type of lymphoma. I captioned it with a description of them and then with “bi-OWL-ogy”. I do cancer research, which I discussed a bit in some of my essays, so it made sense for me and the pun and picture were related to rice through the owl thing.
