My son will be turning 16 in May and we can not go out to visit that weekend. What have you guys done to celebrate a birthday for a long distance child?

Thanks!

At my son’s school you can order a cake which they make and decorate in the school bakery. They set everything up, decorate a table, provide ice cream, etc. I also sent a big care package which is something I don’t usually do because he is only an hour away and comes home frequently. We gave him his gift at home.

Can you arrange a pizza party in the dorm? Talk to the dorm master to get some ideas/costs. At my son’s school, the dorm masters have always been willing to arrange a simple dorm party. The dining room staff might also offer something like a birthday cake delivered to his room.

If he has a favorite restaurant walking distance to campus, you might be able to arrange a dinner there. The kids usually love takeout, so you can probably arrange a takeout dinner on campus.

Most kids are happy with a simple dorm pizza party.

The pizza party (well done for everyone in the dorm) is always a good thing. If it is his favorite sport season, something for the team (if day is a game day) isn’t a bad thing.

The dorm advisor usually arranges something special for each student on his/her birthday and all the kids attend. We usually mailed a few wrapped gifts in a box (my child loves clothes so that is what she usually got). They LOVE receiving gifts at school.

Thanks for the ideas, I will ask the dorm adviser about the pizza party. I think he would like that!
