I recently returned from visiting Rice during Vision 2014 and enjoyed the overall experience. During the alumni dinner, there were some insinuations about RD students who were invited. It was almost as if they implied we were accepted. Am I reading too much into this? What do those who attended think of what was said?

Any time a student is invited to a school, when the school pays, it is an obvious indication that you are a desired student. There are no guarantees though of acceptance. They have not seen your full application.

I was at Vision and really enjoyed it. I too got the same vibe. My specific admissions officer even said to our table, “when you come to Rice because I know you all will”.

I honestly don’t think you should get your hopes up. They were catering to guests. What were they supposed to say? “Probably only 20% of the people at this table will get in. After all, that is our acceptance rate. Good luck!”

I agree with Crazymomster – they are not going to fly students there only to deny 4/5 of them. They probably denied a lot before sending the invites. Now if you are a URM and did NOT get an invite …

My daughter went to Visions and when the president spoke he said he hoped to see all of them on campus in the fall. She definitely got the impression they were all accepted. And she was! I say if you got invited…you are in!

Is it likely that my chance will be hurt for not attending?

Your chances will not be improved. But if you were invited, you “made a cut”, but yes, they are looking for people who want to be at Rice.

Does anybody know any VISION invite that wasn’t admitted?
@ricehopkinsmom Curious, did your daughter get any merit aid?

Everyone invited to Vision will be admitted UNLESS you commit a crime during Vision or you fail out of high school at the end of the year (or they find out you lied in something on your application, etc.). I went to Vision and got in, and every single person I knew that has gone to vision (both my year and the year I hosted Vision prospies) has gotten in. Basically if you get invited to Vision, you will get in, but they just don’t tell you that you’re fully admitted just in case something happens (they they have covered the legal bases).

So, we’re almost guaranteed to get in assuming we don’t do something ridiculously stupid? That’s making me really excited to get decisions in a few weeks. I’m curious about you, too. Did you get a good financial aid package?

Yes. Yes I did, but financial situations vary widely, so I can’t really surmise as to what type of financial aid you may receive. But as far as college financial aid packages go, Rice definitely offers very good ones.

Thanks for the information
