I've heard Stanford strongly emphasizes the admission essays. I have a pretty mundane life haha and I don't know what I would write about. To those who were admitted what experiences did you write about? Thanks in advance.

I would be interested in knowing as well :)

write about anything that makes you you and write it WELL. you could write about an amazing topic and still have a suckish essay and you could write a beautiful eloquent piece about a pineapple. it’s all about personality and voice :)

If I recall, I wrote about how I didn’t let outside factors (parents, teachers, college counselors, the vague notion of college, etc.) dictate my life. I contrasted it with the disturbing trend in America of the opposite being the case, then I called for teachers to focus more on “life” education in class to combat this.

It was somewhat disjointed. I had to tell the colleges a bit about myself while also answering the prompt about an “issue.” It was also tough to keep my essay objective; at the time I was pretty disillusioned with an education system oriented around what I saw as “hoop-jumping.” I frequently had to tone down the language I used (my first draft was nothing short of a scathing indictment).

That was the main essay. For the EC common app short essay, I wrote about holing out in my final golf tournament. My intellectual vitality was about labs in physics class. My roommate one was about sports. And diversity (that was the third, right?) was about coaching golf in the inner-city. Really nothing fascinating.

I wrote about personal growth centered around the theme “Who Am I?”

I still have my essay if you want to see it. PM me.

I wrote about your life.
