Hi,

I recently asked my FinAid office if they could include loans into my financial aid package for the upcoming academic year. They complied, but also said that they cancelled the work study portion of my FinAid package (although I could still work on campus without any restrictions). So my question is...what difference does Work Study (being listed in my FinAid package vs. not) make anyway? (Difference in the context of how much they offer me next year primarily.)

Thanks.

The only difference is work study $ in a savings account will not be considered an asset for FA.

Your college (Brown) meets full need. You are only eligible for subsidized loans to cover need, as determined by the FAFSA. So it is likely that in order to make you eligible for a loan, the college had to reduce some other part of your financial aid package. They chose to take it from your work study award rather than reduce your grants.

Also work study income is not counted as income by FAFSA while non work study income is. (This makes a difference to the EFC if total student income exceeds the student income protection allowance).
