What do Brown students do during January?

There is a huge winter break that goes from Dec. 22 to around Jan. 22. I’m wondering how Brown students spend this time, as most schools have much shorter breaks.

From what I remember, our break was actually pretty close to those of other colleges. I don’t remember being at home significantly longer than any of my friends…if anything, I got home much later than them because I had an exam on the last possible day.

College breaks are definitely longer than those in high school though, and it gets to the point where it’s almost too long. I had a job, but most people just chill out and relax. A lot of people travel.

The dorms close down (except the Graduate Center) and everyone usually leaves to be with family, or if you are an international you will probably goto Boston or get a petition to stay at Brown.

I mostly caught up on sleep; there wasn’t enough time for me to find a job. I know some people begin to prepare for spring courses, particularly organic chemistry.

It is possible to work – if you have a summer job that could use you over the break, for example. Substitute teaching is another option.

Some students travel – it can be a good time to visit your friends who are at other colleges. There are some short-term internships.

anyone know anything about this^?

most kids leave brown & go home.

if youre international, there are ways to stay at brown.

a lot of brown kids substitute in the schools surrounding brown (theres like 10 within 10 blocks), like someone said earlier

The January courses happened for 2 or 3 winters, but were cancelled this year. Very very few students signed up – they cost money and I don’t think you earned credit.
