Right now I'm thinking about substituting my fifth science credit course (AP Biology) with an internship. My school will allow me to do it--I'm just wondering whether or not it will look good/okay/acceptable on my college application.

I'm a junior, and I've already completed all of my science and math core class requirements (4 years of science and 4 years of math). Those aren't my best subjects, and while I know that colleges like to see a schedule including all subject areas, there are only AP classes left as my options. I DON'T want to do badly in an AP class. So I'm hoping to do an internship instead of taking those classes.

By the way, my best subject is English/Creative Writing, and I'm taking a creative writing course at a cc right now.

1st period: Honors US History
2nd period: AP Lang and Comp
3rd period: AP Biology
4th period: Multimedia Level II
5th period: Internship
6th period: Creative Writing (at the community college)
French III Honors (online)

Everyone in my grade has an internship (My school has it scheduled for the last period of the day). Most students have their fifth and sixth period as internship, but I opted for Dual Enrollment. My counselor said that the only way I could get out of my Bio class (which is abhorrent because the teacher can’t teach) is to take an equally difficult math class or have a second internship period then. At this point, I’m striving for a second internship period; I just want to alleviate some of my worries.

I don’t think they think any more of it that another class, honestly. As someone who hires interns, usually high school internships aren’t super “meaty”. Do it if it helps you think about possible major choices. And MAYBE an employer down the road might find it interesting (say when you apply for summer internships while in college). But it is not a particularly sparkly item on a college application.

If you enjoy science then, I’d recommend taking the AP class. Do you think you’ll pursue something science related? Colleges stress that they will look at the rigor of your schedule and what classes were available at your high school. Are there any AP social studies classes you’d want to take instead of science? What about AP Econ?

I’m sure that I want to major in Creative Writing. Science isn’t really my forte. The only other AP class I’d consider taking instead of AP Bio would be AP US History, but it’s too late in the year for me to get into that (I like history so I really kind of regret not taking that class).

However, if I do another internship period, I think I might have time for another class at the cc.

I’d like to think that internships would matter. I mean, they’re work experience in a potential field of study. About 50 students at my school take internships the summer after Junior year through connections with the school. And even if it isn’t sparkly on a college resume, I’m sure that it would allow you to establish yourself in a company or ease your way into getting employed. I know friends that wish they had taken an internship because they’re having trouble finding a job right now. I’m actually planning to intern next semester after school and during summer, hopefully. I definitely advocate it, though I don’t have personal experience yet.

I’d say if the internship is meaningful and somewhat appropriate for the subject you’re looking to major in, it’s an awesome addition to any college app.
