What do colleges use SAT II's for?

I’ve got two opposing sides:

one saying its purely used for college class placement

the other saying its for college admission.

and me saying both.

I'm pretty sure it's for college admission. From what I've heard, college class placement depends on either APs or placement tests taken at the specific school.

It might depend on the school, though.

it's colege admission

college admissions, some schools weight it more than the SAT I so I have heard (like the UC Schools)

It depends on the college. But it is used more often for admissions than placement.

my school uses it for placement

Some of the tests (such as foreign language) are used for placement purposes, although AP's are used more often than not. SAT II's are also used for admission purposes at many schools. They're used to gauge your achievement in a particular subject, and because it's a standardized test, it allows the adcoms to directly compare levels of achievement among different students. This is very useful because it's virtually impossible to directly compare GPA's of people from different schools, considering how some elite private schools are extremely competitive and many schools have grade inflation.

its both (at least at my school)
