What do econ grad programs look for?

and do I need to have a BA in econ to apply?

No, you don’t need a BA. But to be a serious applicant for a PhD program straight out of undergrad, you should probably take all the classes necessary for an econ major anyways.

Admissions for a Masters is less competitive, and you can definitely pursue an MA without a BA in Econ. Most Masters aren’t funded, however. Just something to keep in mind. On the one hand, this means you’ll be spending a boatload of cash for an MA, but on the other hand, it does mean admissions aren’t nearly as cutthroat as they are for PhD students (who are basically competing for limited funding as I understand it).
