What do first years usually do after their freshman year at UCLA? Im looking into applying for an internship but I hear that even the ones that are offered to first and second years are de facto reserved mostly for upperclassmen. Another option is to do summer school and get a part time job, or I could get a full time job.

What do you think is the best option?

Note: I need to decide quickly because summer school deadlines and application deadlines are approaching

during my summer of freshman year, I took 4 classes to fulfill my writing 2 and ge. I found it much easier than even 3 classes during the regular year.

Most people I know, including me, just chilled. It was like high school all over again. I went on vacation to Asia for a month so yeah, it was basically a summer vacation.

Meanwhile, a few people I know stayed at UCLA or went to another UC and took summer school classes.

I personally didn’t know anyone that was able to get an internship during the summer immediately after their freshman year, but I’m sure there are a handful of ambitious people that have done it.

I really really recommend taking classes at a community college to fulfill some requirements. At least in engineering, after 105 or so units (including AP) this isn’t an option anymore.

I took an online cc class and did an internship the summer after my first year.

Internships may be hard, but they aren’t impossible to find.

For my Freshman summer I did:

-an internship in Santa Monica (15hrs/week)
-math 33b at Santa Monica Community College (10hrs/week)
-part time job on UCLA campus (18-20hrs/week)

it kept me busy and was definitely do-able.

went to SMC every morning from 9am-11am.
went to internship M-W noon-5pm.
went to job TR-Sat noon - 6pm.
