I took an Accuplacer test yesterday and found that i made a 94 on my Elementary Algebra - apparently that was well enough to let me pass on through Arithmetic to College Level Math and on the CLM test i made a 41. So i look at my report and see that im down for DMAT 0093 and DMAT 0099. This is unfair and ridiculous. I know i don't have the greatest Algebra skills but i want to transfer to UTD out of this community college in 2 years without any problems. If i take these classes, which are 3 credit hours each, will it jeopardize my chances at getting into UTD in 2 years, if not should i just go ahead and do it, if i do - how long will it hold me back? Please help me find a solution to this problem... Thanks

These classes won’t hurt you at all.

I can’t speak to the claim of “unfair and ridiculous.” These remedial classes are in place so you don’t take a math class and fail it or do poorly. If you scored a 41 on the Accuplacer I imagine you really need to beef up you math skills.

You can’t get out of taking these classes unless you either don’t go to the community college or you convince a counselor to waive them for you. The latter will take a lot of convincing though…

If you take these classes and then take your required math classes in an accelerated format perhaps you can get back on schedule. Or, if you feel you are up to it do self study and see if you can CLEP the College Algebra. A passing CLEP score and the ensuing credit from it should be more than enough to get a waiver…

I dont really know what a “CLEP” is but ive got to register for classes soon, can i do a CLEP even after im in the developmental class?

There are CLEP exams for many subjects. You need to find out which CLEP exams your CC accepts for credit. Check the website for that information. Your CC may have a CLEP exam site right on your campus. If they don’t your advisor can help you find the closest one. The CLEP exams can be taken at any time during the year, so you might be able to squeeze it in before your classes start.

Lots of people have to take some developmental math. Don’t worry about it slowing you down. Take a look at your program and see which semesters you could squeeze in an extra class, and whether or not you could take something in summer school next year. With good planning, you should be able to graduate and transfer on time.
