I have applied for transfer to several colleges including bard, vassar, sarah lawrence, and suny new paltz. I am currently attending a college i hate, fordham, and i applied to suny new paltz because i knew i could get in and atleast leave if i really wanted to. My parents dont want me to leave saying that it will hurt my chances of success after college. I have no friends and i am completely miserable and dont fit in so im not sure what to do. Is the reputation so much worse? what should i do?

Like many others will tell you, for the most part, undergrad doesn’t matter. There are few rare exceptions to this rule (a degree in business I think is a big one), but the general rule is true and tested: where you go to college matters a lot less than what you do there. If you are miserable and have made no friends, and are dead certain that a different campus really will make a difference, transfer. Still, be sure that the problem is in Fordham and now in you.

My son knows someone who transferred from Fordham to New Paltz. He is much happier at NP. My son also transferred from UMiami to NP and likes it better. It isn’t always about the prestige of the college…sometimes it needs to be about what is a better fit and where you will be happiest.
