I just looked up the teachers on my schedule for this fall 2009... They are horrible!! I saw people post stuff on ratemyprof about them not caring about their students and considering B's and C's to be good grades.. What do I do??

Uh. Should have checked before? Too bad?

If all of them suck it’ll be pretty hard to change all of them, if your school even allows you to change. I’d say learn from this and in the future look up profs before you sign up.

My school has add/drop days before school starts, and then you also have the chance to change classes in the first week and a half. Depends on your school, I guess, to see if you are screwed.

I got no choice in the matters of my classes (except history where I go to choose which one out of 2 I wanted), class times and profs, so consider yourself lucky if you do!

Yup…too bad. If there’s an add/drop period, you may have the chance to change if people drop out but it really depends. My school’s add/drop has been open all summer (except for the two weeks they were working out freshmen schedules) so I’ve been switching my classes all around since May. See if there’s add/drop, but otherwise, too bad, there’s not really anything you can do except see if spots open in classes with better teachers.

I don’t have a choice, they assign you a schedule at my school (Baruch) for first semester. I have a very good math and art prof. But my literature, political science, and philosophy profs are very hard and indifferent about your grade

Well if you have an add drop, change it. If not, then just work harder in those classes.

I’ve run into that problem before. My advice: if you can’t switch now or there’s no other classes open, learn from the reviews. One of my professors had a bunch of reviews, like, “Plays favorites, never teaches in class, and gives awful grades.” What did I do? Played teacher’s pet, went to office hours all the time, and showed I was trying. Got an A and on their good side. Sure, still didn’t like them at all, but my GPA is more important than making a friend in this case. Try asking around for what they like.

I’m actually in the same boat. my college stuck me in a block set of classes and now i have terrible chem and bio professors (according to ratemyprofessors.com) with scores averaging 1-2 overall. But for those teachers, only 2 or 3 people bother to write a bad review per semester. Even though no one else bothered to write a good review ( and i mean nobody) does that mean they are bad or do they just **** of a few people per semester and are otherwise average profs?

I wouldn’t always trust ratemyprofessor… I think it’s good to get an idea, but I’ve learned that a lot of people on there just don’t do the work and then get mad that they are “given” a bad grade. I had a teacher last fall who had HORRIBLE reviews, but she was the only one who taught the class I needed so I took it and she was difficult at times, but if you did what she asked of you, you did fine. I ended up with an A and it was my favorite class of the semester.

If you have an add/drop period, I would still try to take advantage of it, but if not, pay attention to what the teachers look for…it doesn’t always mean it’s harder, it just means you have to do things their way.

Ratemyprofesor negative ratings tend to be written by students with a vendetta for the professor. On the whole, most professors are no worse than mundane and certainly not the torturous monsters that site makes them out to be. It’s a lot like rating products on Amazon – people with negative things to say tend to take out their frustration by writing a review, but in reality, there is a much larger population with no serious complaints.

I’ve had professors that struggled to get one decent rating on that site out of dozens, but they were fine. Relax.

Of course they’re indifferent about your grade. You’re not in highschool anymore. The only person who cares about you getting good grades is you. And by the way, there are many classes where a B is a good grade, so get the whole “only an A is acceptable” thing out of your head now.

I love it! The pit of hopelessness I feel myself falling deeper and deeper into always tends to vanish after reading comments from fellow CCers like yourselves!! Gracias!!

honestly, i’ve found that what students say on ratemyprofessors may not always be the case. i’ve freaked out over a few allegedly “bad” professors, but ended up being fine

Chuy what do you mean a B is a good grade? It hurts your gpa and brings your chances at a good grad school down to oblivion…

Getting a B is not the end of the world by any means. Also, for grad school, they look at more than just your GPA. Unlike undergrad admissions, there are lots of factors that can and are taken into account.

if you can’t find your professor on rateyourprofessor.com, how likely is it that they’re too horrible to be mentioned?

^Could be their first year teaching…

but i can’t find a single one of mine…

Are you going to a rather small school? Check the other teacher’s reviews and see how many there are. If they have like 1 or 2, then maybe people from your school just don’t use that website.

I prefer PickAProf/MyEdu anyway, because most other websites either have reviews that are all “OMG HE SUCKS” or “OMG HE ROCKS” and are too extremely biased. For some reason MyEdu has a lot of middle-of-the-road reviews that are very long, descriptive, and helpful and not just good/bad ratings.

It can also work the other way as well. I had a professor who had glowing reviews on RMP, but she wound up being by far the worst professor I ever had. People liked her because she made jokes about getting laid and high, instead of, I dunno, teaching sociology?

My favorite professor ever also had pretty mediocre reviews.
