What do I need to do get into NC state or Michigan Tech?

I want to major in engineering, but I am having a tough time deciding which colleges might accept me. I have gotten poor grades my high school years, and I really regret it. Basically, my gpa is a 2.8, which is 3.7 weighted. My main focus school is NC state, because I live in NC and the engineering program there is great. Also, My sat scores are as follows:

Critical reading: 580
Math:710
Writing: 620

Total: 1910
However, I can still improve that score, even raise it above 2000.

I have well above 100 service hours, and I am almost an eagle scout, and a member of the OA. I have done chess club for 2 years, as well as debate and interact club for 2 years each. I have actively volunteered shelving books at the library, helping with the special olympics, and Collecting canned foods for loaves and fishes each year.

I want to know, what are my chances of getting in to MTU, NC state, or any good engineering college for that matter? I know I have messed up in my hs years, but I am willing to work to correct those errors. Once again, any criticism, help, or suggestions are welcome! Also what colleges do you think I might stand a chance to get into, with my credentials?

bummp. Anything would be helpful :)

You can make your own assessment this way: [University Planning & Analysis](http://www2.acs.ncsu.edu/UPA/commondata/cds2009/fullcds2009.htm#secc) is the NC State Common Data Set, Section C. They accept more than 50% of applicants (section C1 - good for you - ECs are only considered, as is state residency). GPA and Test Scores are most highly weighted, along with rigor and class rank (Section C7). You are in the middle 50%ile for CR, top 75%ile for math and writing (good). 83% are in the top quarter of their class (Section C10 - where are you in your class???). Your GPA kills you (only 1% of attendees are in the 2.5 - 2.99 GPA region).

Being willing to “correct those errors” related to grades is nice but how do colleges who take a flyer on you know you will follow through? One potential way to show you have turned a new leaf is to attend a local CC with good grades and transfer. This has the added benefit of saving $.
