I have so many questions and I have no idea what to do.
I’m an american citizen, living and studying in china, wanting to go to college in france. Right now i am in highschool and I want to major in Art history IN FRANCE.
what tests and applications do I need to apply? I know america needs sat/act then applications but what about France? Do I just need my highschool records and diploma?
How much french do i need to know?
This question is for after I possibly get in. I know american colleges require freshmen students to take all basic introductory courses, math, english blah blah but I suck at math and science. Does art history major in France still require basic introduction classes for freshmen?
There was a French student here yesterday (or day before?) talking about going to college in U.S. She might be able to help if you can find her original post (scroll back a few pages?).
The admission requirements will vary by university, with e.g. the Grandes Ecoles having their own admission tests. Why don’t you start by reading the admission information for foreign applicants on a few French university websites? (If you don’t know enough French to read a French university website, you might want to choose a country whose language you are more familiar with.)
First - and most critical- question: can you listen, read and write in French fluently enough to do college level work?
If not, the main Art History course offered in English in France (that I know of) is at the American University in Paris, in which case the second most critical question is: can you afford E45,000 per year? If so, you are probably in good shape, as you can apply online, there is an 80%+ acceptance rate and it is test-optional.
There is also a BFA in Art History, Theory and Criticism taught in English at the Paris School of Art, which requires a portfolio, and is about E40K per year.
If you have the fluency, then Art History at the Sorbonne is the big name. Applications go in between mid-November and mid-January. Be aware that there is very limited accommodation available even for international students and you are very likely to have to make your own arrangements. Application info is on the Sorbonne site.
In the category of un-asked for advice, if you decide to go the French university path, do some homework. Schooling in France is very different from American or typical “International” schools, and it would be smart to be sure that you know what you are signing up for.
You need to be excellent at French and take the TFLE.
The best Art History program is called ECOLE DU LOUVRE and, as the name indicates, is right there in le Louvre. http://www.ecoledulouvre.fr/en
The Sorbonne isn’t a big name except in the US. The program isn’t bad, per se, but it’s three universities, all underfunded and overcrowded with dismal facilities and learning conditions.
No there’s no gen eds with science/math, in fact most students there will have stopped with these subjects after Seconde (equivalent of O’levels/GCSE).
