Alright, so I'm a sophomore and I've been in a bit of a slump lately... My grades aren't as good as I'd liked them to be and I don't have any energy. I've been in really poor health lately and I've been busier than ever, and my grades have been suffering as a consequence. I think I need to see a doctor because I've even missed my yearly checkup, but I really do not have time and even my parents can't find a way to fit it in. I'm really just sick of this year because I'm pretty much just locked into B's in my classes, but I know I'll be able to do it better next year because I've gained experience from this and have chosen a better schedule to fit me.

So.. What do I need to do to get into UCI? I really would like to go there after high school, but I am sincerely clueless on what my stats have to be because my GC is completely unhelpful (I asked if I could see her a month ago and she's too 'busy', she just recommended me to work harder. Thanks.) and all of my senior friends are either going to CC or majoring in music.

My stats (so far):
3.78 GPA, however, it will probably be a 3.5 or 3.6ish by the end of this semester.
Not very many hours of community service, but I'm doing some over the summer. (maybe 30 hours)
EC - in my school's chamber choir, I recently performed in Carnegie Hall with them.

Wait.. does freshman year GPA count? If not I'm screwed.

hopefully, my schedule for next year:
Spanish III
AP Psych
AP Lang
Choir
Yoga
AP Bio
Pre Calculus

I'm taking US History of the summer, hopefully.

yo donT worry abt it to0 much
all I would say is.....try harder next year.....use some kinda strategy...don't overload urself with APz.....cuz trust me u gonna get killed ( i did that an f***ed up any chances I had for Berkeley)......Take only abt 3 Aps max.....If u gonna go in eng. or any kind of sciences, try to take AP courses in Maths or Sciences.
Have something in ur essay thats gonna stand out. Your essay doesn't have to have a lot of things....I could just be one thing...but something thats gonna hit the spot really well...
other then that...chill...dont worry abt it to0 much

The three AP's next year will be good. Do well in your classes and show them an improved GPA from 10th grade. Take the SAT and get an 1800+, get a job, volunteer, get involved and all that. Definitely improve the EC's, the one isn't enough. If you do those things you'll have a shot at getting in.

If you care, then you need to worry aobut it now. Don't listen to all of them, work hard in school =]. Anyway here's a quick guide as to what you should get to roughly garuntee admissions to UCI By the way, A LOT of people get in with lower qualities in the following areas but it would be standard and safe to achieve this:

First off, only the sophomore and junior years of high school count. Get about a 3.7+ weighted GPA. Make sure you take over 40 semesters worth of A-G courses. Anything that fits these categories:

Next get a 1800+ on your SAT1 (1800 being minimum. I recommend 1900) and 600-700 on both of your SAT2s. Then achieve at least 300 hrs of community service. These are the most objective and easy criteria to achieve. I think if you achieve these you should make it into UCI.

To compensate for the previous items, you can do the following:
-get a job
-acquire evidence of significant leadership abilities
-become a Pres. or VP of 2+ clubs orr maybe run for an office position at your school
-join a few extra-curricular activities like sports, instruments, martial arts, etc. (you already have choir, that's good)

Lastly, make sure you report anything unique about yourself in your application. Colleges love seeing someone who is dedicated to something or exhibits talents in. This can mean things like creative entrepreneurship, dedication to a type of community service, win awards for something you're good at.

Oh, I forgot. I play piano as well, and I've participated in a LOT of festivals and have won awards for it... I've been playing since I was three. I've finished the Certificate of Merit and I play in about six festivals a year. I also participate in festivals for voice.

I'm also in a club at my school where I tutor English-learner kids. I'm planning on being VP of choir and another club next year.

Hopefully I'll be able to raise my GPA. I think I just overloaded myself with too much stuff this year, plus I was really unlucky with the teachers I got.

there...u alrdy have your ECs...just make you put them in good words.... for example, piano = your passion since childhood, you have been concentrating on it since then. English tutor - helping community
but yea...with ECs you have, if you just keep ur Gpa high enough...around 3.8 ( weighted)....i don't see why u wont get in
gluck

A note about extracurriculars - admissions not only wants to see involvement, but they want to see sustained involvement and advancement. So basically, they want to see that you were involved with an activity and stuck with it all throughout high school, and hopefully advancing within the organization to eventually have some kind of leadership role.

They'd rather see you be involved in 2 or 3 clubs for all four years rather then being involved in 8 or 9 clubs throughout high school but only for a year or two each.

Make sure to always take a full schedule, and the more AP and Honors classes you take, the better (should be common sense). Also, taking classes at a JC is a huge bonus. Makes you look like you care enough about your education to take classes outside of what your high school curriculum can offer you.
