Title sums it up, what does a dorm room already have? Any shelves? A Table?

Most dorms will have a desk with a shelf or two attached and a chair to go with it. Most also have some drawer space under the bed or in the closet, but it probably won’t be enough for all your stuff. Aside from bringing clothes and other basic personal belongings, I’d visit your dorm first and make a checklist for local shopping after you figure out what’s there and what isn’t.

Yeah I’m going to do that, I just can’t stop planning because I’m starting in January and the few months left feels like the longest wait I’ll ever have to endure :p

Your sanity. It will just drag you down if you bring it.

In all seriousness, if you’re one of those people that likes to read, I’d suggest against bringing books (besides those necessary for class) along with you. For one, you won’t have as much time to read them as you may think. For another, you can just go to the library and get whatever book you want to read if you do have the time. I personally brought a few books along to reread if I had extra time and never had time to actually read them.

What a dorm room already has or what is available to students in a dorm (like a TV, microwave, sink, etc) will vary with the college and dorm. Your school’s housing website should tell you what standard things your dorm comes with.

Really depends. My dorm doesn’t have a TV, or microwave; but there’s a sink and refrigerator in there and that’s pretty much it. We have to bring the microwave and TV with us.

^My freshman dorm had a microwave in the common area for the dorm (i.e. each floor shared a microwave), and there was a TV that you could rent from the RAs. They also had a kitchen sink in the common area, but there was no refrigerator. It depends on the school, which is why you have to check your particular university.

Your school should provide a complete list of everything they’ve got, either somewhere online or in your move-in packet. My dorm had a bed, dresser, desk, chair & lamp for each person, as well as a microwave, bookshelf and mini-fridge shared between everyone in the room. If you’ve got a desk, chair, dresser & lamp (I would be astounded if it didn’t come with all of these) you really don’t need much else. Other than some A/V equpiment one of my roommates brought (TV & stereo) the only other thing I bought was a large plastic bin to store some clothes.

I live in Colorado, so you don’t need winter clothes during the summer, and you only need a quarter of your summer clothes during winter. The bin helps to stuff away all that extra stuff. Other than that one of my roommates, who shares my coffee addiction, split the cost with me for a single serving coffee maker and an espresso machine.
Note: Keurig is the biggest waste of money. Instead of buying a $200 machine and paying a premium for every cup of coffee you make on top of it (those pods are expensive), buy something like this…
[Buy Hamilton Beach® The Scoop? Single-Cup Coffee Maker from Bed Bath & Beyond](http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/1/1/101565-hamilton-beach-the-scoop-single-cup-coffee-maker.html)

Usually a desk, bed, and dresser at the least. Make sure to get a fridge and a microwave
