I don’t have many accomplishments ( that I know of any way) my extracurricular activities aren’t that strong so what can I write about.
Some ideas were to combine the fact that I’m poor to my passion for clothes/fashion ( I sew A LOT, things like blazers, skirts, jackets hats etc) would admission officers want to read about this I know I’m not the only kid who sew.
Yes! I personally would be interested an essay about a passion for sewing. What makes you select certain patterns over others? Is it that you can picture thefinoshed product? A gut feeling? You can describe the feeling you get taking a bolt of fabric and some paper patterns and creating something pretty and functional. It’s like magic! There are plenty of ways I think you could write a great essay about sewing.
You want to write an essay that will give admissions officers insight into you that 1) won’t be found elsewhere in the application and 2) will make them want to have you on campus. The sewing essay could work as long as you don’t do a “woe is me, I can’t afford what I like” essay and focus on why/how this has made you a stronger person, a person who is able to find ways to work around obstacles, etc. I would do a draft and see how it goes.
@happy1 thanks I was thinking of canceling out the things about me being poor since many other essays will probably talk about that as well and would be a sap story. I will talk about how being an introvert inspired me into doing sewing instead.
In my experience, they would want to hear about your being poor (if that is a central part of your life) and how it affected your sewing. Instead of focusing on the sewing itself, why not talk about your emotions or how it changed your life? Remember your essays are there so they can learn more about you as a person.
In addition, they always like to see a person who can overcome obstacles or work through challenges–similarly to what @happy1 said. You have a wealth of information to talk about, and moreover, it usually doesn’t have to be about something you accomplished–that can go under other parts of your application.
Well, they say “clothes make the man.” So how better to be a “self made man” (or woman) than to make your own clothes? How has making your own clothes been a tangible manifestation of your process, as a young adult, of becoming the person you want to be in the world? You can touch (lightly) on the “I was resourceful because I was poor” point, but primarily work the metaphor and say something about who you are.
