What do institutions (UVA) put the most weight on when transferring after 1st year?

I am considering applying as a transfer for the fall of 2007 from James Madison University to UVA. I applied this year ED, but was deferred, and then later, rejected. One thing I have noticed is that many applicants, although they have a high GPA, are getting waitlisted and rejected. So basically, my question is.....

What do colleges (UVA in particular) put the most weight on when deciding on transfer applicants? I assumed it would be SATs and college GPA, but I was not sure. Personally, I have a 1420/2040 SAT (800 M, 620 V, 620 W), and a top 21% class rank (GPA 3.45 UW, 4.05 W). I'm going to JMU as a presidential physics scholar, and hope to work a lot on research, and get my grades as high as possible.

Any input on what UVA would deem as the highest importance while transferring after my first year?

your h.s. grades and rank will matter less as time progresses at JMU.

keep your gpa above a 3.6 and you'll have a shot at UVa

if you don't get in after your first year, try as a junior transfer.

if you're really set on UVa, consider attending a virginia community college. associate degree graduates with a gpa of 3.4+, who have met certain course requirements, have guaranteed admissions to UVa

They're looking to see that you've met most of their area requirements. If you have a lot of AP credit, and you take the right classes your freshman year I think you'd have a really good shot at getting in. I'm pretty sure thats how I got in as a first year transfer, I am almost finished with their requirements because of AP's. Look on their website to see what classes they want transfers to take. good luck...and don't count jmu off yet, you're not even there.

Yeah, I'm not going to JMU with the immediate thought that I want to transfer; I'm sure it would make my time there less than pleasant. I'm taking two AP tests (Calc BC and Phys C-(I'm a physics major)) and when I called to talk to an admissions counselor, she talked to me about the regular requirements (per semester): 1 foreign language class, 1 lab science/math, 1 social science, etc. I've just been kind of worried lately because I've seen the people who get waitlisted, and can't understand why they weren't admitted with a 3.9 GPA or whatever the case. Any other opinions?

Also.... just out of curiousity....

Oyze: How many classes do you have left for your GenEd at UVA (1 semester, 1 class, etc)? And what AP tests did you take?

college gpa would definitely be first. also, take A LOT of classes that are also challenging.

More than the standard 15 credit hours per semester? I just don't want to over load myself and not be able to get a good GPA.

blackflag, i applied from vt to uva this year. i was in the same boat as you last year, but do not become obsessed with uva. jmu might be the right school for you. anyways, if u really feel like uva as the best choice, try to take lik 15 credits or so. and get atleast 3.7.I had 3.8 last semester with 15 credits

Thanks crichessill! I'll have to see how it goes next year. I thought noticed that you weren't sure about staying at Tech or not in a thread in the UVa forum. Did you make your decision?

yea i am staying here for another year

great! thanks for all of your help, and good luck next year at tech.
