what do mechanical engineers do?

what kinds of projects do mechanical engineers work on? do they build robots? buildings? bridges? devices like mri's?

Something like that…

My dad’s a mechanical engineer and even after 18 years I’m still not entirely sure what the hell he does lol. I think he works with and sells systems and system controls…

sounds fascinating XD.

Design machinery. Could be something like an elevator, jet engine, car engine, medical implants (bioengineering), and yes robots (although that also calls on computer engineers and software engineers etc).

I’m a mech engineering major and one of the reasons I chose it is because the options are broad and kind of infinite.

I know of people in the field who work as patent lawyers for inventions (I’m sure you see the connection), or design rollercoasters and amusement rides, or work in aerospace, car design, machinery – I mean the actual list is kind of endless since it’s such a broad field.

most mech e’s do much simpler stuff that you’re listing. For example, they might design a gear system or a pipeline. Mech E is really broad though. It’s pretty boring as well, like most engineering. I’m almost done my degree.

I think you might get better responses at the engineering forum on CC under 'college majors"
