What do NYU students normally wear to class? Are they all like fashionista?

Will a plain shirt and shorts or jeans be alright?

I'm just worried because I don't exactly have the fanciest wardrobe ><

Most of us go buck-naked.

you need to choose what house you are in, the gryffindor robes are in. the others are okay too just make sure you don’t wear the hufflepuff ones.

Ravenclaw is obviously where it’s at. We’re awesome.

^^ nice.

I’ve heard NYUers are straight hipsters, so websites like lookbook.nu might serve as inspiration, but then again, I haven’t applied to Hogwarts yet…

Lololol. Let’s put it this way: there’s an American Apparel DIRECTLY ACROSS from 720 Broadway (Tisch).

there should be an NYU student style blog, I think I heard of one in Nylon Magazine, but I’m not sure.

@ MAP. gosh! no Urban Outfitters?! (sarcasm goes here :))

There’s a UO directly across from the Mercer Street building, and around the corner from Hayden Hall.

Oh. that’s scary…

I mean, it isn’t unusual. Broadway, particularly around Houston (near NYU) is VERY valuable real estate. Tourists often walk on the streets (you dodge them on the way to class) and on-Broadway or on-6th Avenue storefronts are desirable.

Stayed at their dorms last summer and really, I didn’t see any special or extravagant in what the people were wearing walking in out of the dorms. I know that it was during the summer and that school wasn’t in session yet but it was still a good overview of the students in my opinion… :)

This is the NYU Student style blog

While NYU definitely has its share of fashionistas and fashionistos, the majority of students aren’t all that different from any other college. A college branded hoody, some sweats, a tee shirt and jeans are still staples in any student’s wardrobe. You will find people dressing in a million different ways, no one really cares what brand you have on (most college students don’t at least).

I am from Southern California and wore a volcom/hurley/quicksilver t-shirt, shorts, and sandals almost every day, weather permitting (even sometimes when it didnt). I dont feel like I saw a TON of NYU sweaters being worn, well not as much so as that of other campuses. Some basketball shorts and pajamas were part of my lazy day wardrobe as well. Get some polos, button up shirts, nice designer jeans, sperrys/vans/shiny black leather shoes, and even some t shirts and you will be fine. Popular stores that were in the vicinity were:Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, Gap, Scoop, Intermix, Blue and Cream, United Colors of Benetton, Bloomingdales, French Connection, and my favorite-Old Navy. I didnt have much room in my budget for clothes, so whenever I needed a new button up I would just go there. OH OH OH! Theres a million H&M’s really close to campus.

This thread is hilarious. @MAP, yes there is a UO and an American Apparel across the street from the school, but it IS Broadway, what do you expect? And to the initial question, just don’t try too hard. The typical NYU pretentious hipster doesn’t care what you wear, but they CAN smell fear and intimidation.

I said pretty much the same thing in post #10. That it’s a trendy/tourist-ridden neighborhood, and that was one of the reasons why the stores were there.
