What do others think of your child going to boarding school?

When I was at boarding school, my parents were often asked "how could you DO that to her!", often accompanied by a look of shock. It seems that a lot of people thought my mother and father had sent me away against my will to reform school! They had to explain that going to BS was my idea, and while they missed me they supported my decision. Have parents on this site come across similar sentiments? If so, does anyone have any interesting anecdotes from discussions they have had about BS with acquaintances/friends/family?

Oh, no, not this can of worms again! ;)
agentwood, there are a few threads on this very topic… believe me, you are not alone. My daughter’s best friend’s mom said that very same thing to me… and then followed up with “Well, WE just love her to bits. She can come and live with us anytime.” !!! I’ve kind of given up trying to reason with people like this… check those threads, there are some very articulate comebacks posted by the very wonderful parents on this board (none of whom sent their kids away agauinst their will)!

Thanks, Cameo! I’m fairly new here so I haven’t seen those threads. I tried searching, but couldn’t find anything. Maybe I’m using the wrong search words. :-)

I would give you the threads but I sadly have no idea how to do that. But I know that some others can show you… like ChoatieMom, maybe?? :)

This one? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-parents/1533263-other-parents-reaction-boarding-school.html

Also “Negative reactions regarding child attending BS” but I don’t know how to make it a link.

Thanks, PhotoMom and twinsmama! I’ve seen some great responses on these. Especially the kid who was asked what he did to get sent away, and replied “I knifed a teacher.” Excellent!

The way to embed a link to either a thread or a post is:

[thread=<thread#>]Negative Reactions regarding child attending BS[/thread ]</thread#>

For a post, just substitute “post” for “thread” (and delete that last space before the closing bracket).

To find the thread number, open the thread, and look in the url in the address bar at the top of your browser: the thread number is the number directly preceding the title of the thread.

To find the post number, click on the number of the post (for example, this is post #8) and, again, look for the number in the address bar at the top of your browser.

Also, where I entered the name of the thread, “Negative reactions…”, you can enter anything you want. When someone clicks on those words, whatever they are, they will be forwarded to the thread or post.

Hope this makes sense.

The easiest way to link a thread is to simply open up the thread in another window, then cut-n-paste the URL of that page right in your post.

Here it is:
