What do people like me do?!

I am currently a high school student in VA. I was recently accepted at Ohio State and probably will be accepted to George Mason University. My question is what is the best course for me to take in order to reach my ultimate goal: Uva or CORNELL? Should I pay OOS at OSU or pay for just tuition at Mason. I was admitted pre-business at OSU and I would just like some feedback on what I should do because I dont know anyone who could give me advice.

Background: I am Af-American, poorer household (<$70,000 for 6 people) my HS GPA about 3.0 , SAT like 1800

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I have less than a month to make a decision!

Definitely go to Mason. Remember that it is very hard to transfer into UVA/Cornell from either school so keep up that GPA!

MAson for sure, instate prices, just as good or even better to transfer to uva then from ohiostate. def keep up a high gpa, once college like uva sees you excel in college studies, your chances are as good as anyones'

by "ultimate goal" do you mean grad school or xfer?

I mean transfer.

Ok. I think you really need to take a deep breath or two now and avoid any hasty decisions or conclusions. UVa and Cornell are great schools, but the 2 choices you have are pretty good, too. The problem I want to warn you against is entering college with the idea that "I'm just passing time here until I can get to my real goal".

This is a recipe for missing out on a lot your college has to offer; for a lot of kids it means you aren't going to invest in friendships because you know you'll be leaving those people, you're not going to try to get to know profs because you're looking forward to the profs at your next school, you don't take immerse yourself in all the campus has to offer because its not your "real" home.

Its a problem for 2 reasons. First, until you can xfer it IS your real home, and walking around wanting to be somewhere else kills the experience. At worst it breeds a cynicism where kids find like-minded people who think they belong somewhere else, 'dissing their school and the misguided souls who actually enjoy it. Second, there is no guarantee your xfer plans will work out.

What I suggest is pick the school that's the best fit for you of your 2 choices and throw yourself into it, fully expecting to spend 4 years there. If it isn't what you want, THEN consider a xfer. But if you go in expecting to leave I think you may be setting yourself up for less than you could have.

what's OOS?

out of state

As Crobsy, Sills, and Nash said:

and if you can't be with the one you love
it's alright
Go ahead and love the one, love the one, love the one your with

I have been thinking about this overnight. I strongly urge you to go to Ohio State. It's a Big Ten school, a major research university with a huge number of opportunities, and it is known throughout the country. I'm guessing once you spend a semester in Columbus (and go to some of the football games), Charlottesville or Ithaca will become the furthest thing from your mind.

As for GMU; I live nearby. It’s a pretty, but isolated, campus that’s still defining itself academically. If you really want to transfer to UVA think about going to one of the community colleges that has an articulation agreement with UVA.

Mikemac, I never thought about it like that. tsdad, the sports thing is a huge plus

I really appreciate the help, I cant get enough!
