What do people say about UCIrvine?

What do people say about the school when you say you go to the school ?
etcc..

Seems like everyone’s first reaction is, “There’s a lot of Asian people at UCI”… but people say it’s a very relaxing and social environment! :)

(paraphrased from actual reactions)

Older sister: It’s a decent school for biology. A lot of commuters, but still not as much as at Cal States.
Brother-in-law: You mean the University of Chinese Immigrants?
Cousin, who went to Cal: It’s a decent school; (in response to me) I think its whole commuter reputation is a bit overblown
Cousin, who went to a party school: You’ll have fun there. (reassuringly?)
Dad: It’s safe in an expensive, beautiful city
Friend from a different state: I don’t know that much about it
Adult friend who lives in a nearby city: Studious, hardworking students

“Good school”

that said, 95% of the population is filled with idiots and people who aren’t exactly prestige whores.

“Good school”

that said, 95% of the population is filled with idiots and people who aren’t exactly prestige whores.

are you serious?

As someone who lives across the street from UCI, I’ll be blunt. Everyone who doesn’t go there thinks its a school for asian nerds(hence University of Chinese Immigrants), and that there is no social life at all. The few people I know that go there commute and are hang out with people they went to highschool with. Theres no frat row, or sizeable area of student houses near campus so everyone is spread-out. When I go to in-n-out there me and my friends are often the only white people there. That being said, it’s a great school and if partying/having a good time isn’t really your thing and your studious it’s probably a great school.

It’s not the best school out of the middle tier… there’s really nothing unique about it except it’s close to mall to spend lots of money at.

It’s very clean… that’s about it.

does not sound very good tho…

“…but you’re not Asian”
“Somebody’s got the yellow fever”
“Condolences…”

yes, i’m serious. I honestly believe that an intellect 1 deviation or so above the population mean constitutes mediocrity. For those going off of an IQ scale, that’s around 115 or so(if you consider IQ to correlate almost perfectly with intellect). I also made a statement pertaining to prestige whores… UCI is a solid university, I don’t consider it all THAT prestigious however(it might just be that MANY of the people I knew from HS go there even though they were often people I saw as below me on intellectual matters). I am not ashamed to go here and I have a sense of accomplishment for what I’ve done, I just don’t think it exceptional.

On the contrary, UCI is actually pretty remarkable. In 45 out of 50 states, it’d easily be the best public university (and the best overall university in most). In terms of a number of objective factors (like research grant money awarded, research citations, awards won by faculty, ranking of programs), it’s easily in the top 1-2% in the US. There are three Nobel prize winners in UCI’s history, and two currently in the faculty. Very few institutions can claim that.

UCI’s retention rate and graduation rate for undergrads are easily among the top 10 best for public schools. It is one of the most applied to schools in the United States, and it’s acceptance rate is very low relative to other public schools.

That said, many high school students feel only luke warm about UCI because california simply has so many incredible academic institutions like Stanford, caltech, Berkeley, etc. It’s difficult to stand out in the distinguished UC system.

I would definitely argue that UCI is on the top half of the UCs in terms of career opportunities… IF YOU TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEM. UCI is in an urban area, google is practically next door, deloitte is… there are a number of F500 companies within an hours drive of UCI. I can’t say that about Davis, Santa Barbara, Riverside or Merced. Even SD isn’t optimally located as it’s to the far south(excluding biotech opportunities but that’s not my forte)

I do think Irvine is a great school and I know that it has solid placement if you make it for yourself(that is you’re career centric about your college education) but things won’t be handed to you upon graduation as they are at say Caltech or Standford. That said, I believe two or three undergrads have iBanking internships with UBS in New York this summer and probably a few others. I know people who have outcompeted and gotten whatever positions they want.

I’m from Palo Alto so everyone expects people to get into schools like Stanford, Berkeley, and UCLA. I’m attending as a freshman to UCI in the fall; I’ll be honest, people give me weird looks when I say that I’m attending UCI.

you know what? f*** them. Life is way too short for you to base your happiness on the approval of strangers.

I know you’re coming from high school and college seems like the biggest thing right now. In the end, the only thing that will contribute to your long term happiness are the relationships you hold and your own philosophy towards life.

dude UCI is dope to me, and seems pretty popular in the UC Transfer section.

people needa fall back.

People say that it is boring here and that there are a lot of commuters and Asians. They also say that a lot of people only choose Irvine because they didn’t get into Berkeley, UCLA, or UC San Diego. I’m not gonna try to defend it against all of these because some of them are true, but trust me- it is a good school.
