What do the Acceptance, Deferral & Rejected Emails Look Like?

I'm fairly certain that I'm not the only one who is curious about this! Any past applicants out there to let us know?

Nothing. Decisions are not send out by email at all, only the notification of when decisions will be released online is sent by email. An electronic copy of the decision letter will be available on the status website I believe (the system was revamped after my year) and a physical letter is mailed out along with an estimated financial aid package.

SBR, he might be referring to the specific words Guttentag says in the letters.

Rejection at post #1084

Acceptance:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/duke-university/677085-acceptance-letter.html

Possibly. However, I must emphasize that no decisions are sent via email. This has been a longstanding Duke policy that may differ from other colleges.

I’ve heard that the ED acceptance letter starts out with the sentence:

“Duke is YOUR University” (or something like that)

I’m glad to hear that the kids will hear by letter. For some reason, I’d been imagining E-mail, and dreading the moment. So since the acceptance letter comes with a financial aid packet, will it be in a “big” envelope, whereas a rejection letter could come in a regular business size envelope? I remember way back in my day, you didn’t want the little letter…

Yes, the acceptance will be in a larger envelope. Frankly I’d want to find out electronically before receiving a letter. The thin envelope is a dead give away and takes the suspense out of everything.

Yes, I seem to remember something along the lines of what my3gr8boyz said but the first word is congratulations after which I didn’t really read anything. I can’t really dig out my letter since it’s at home across the country at the moment.

The acceptance letter is in a large envelope-sized parcel inside of which is a thick folder/document holder with a response card, a letter, some pamphlets, and the financial aid estimate.

@hauteStandard, you are correct. I didn’t phrase my question very well. I realize that you receive an email instructing you when to log in to see your response. I was referring to what appears on the screen depending on whether you have been accepted, rejected or deferred. Is that screen the same as the paper letter you later receive by snail mail? (I know that some other schools have flashed a giant “YES” or some equivalent before the “letter”)

@SBR, thanks for your quick response.

Decisions are announced online (not emailed) and a copy of the acceptance letter is sent in the mail in a Duke folder. They also send you bumper stickers/other info, and I got a note from my admissions officer. The ED acceptance notification starts off like this:

"Dear xxxxx:

Duke University is now your university - congratulations!"

I remember because I had to read it like ten times before I figured out that I was actually accepted, haha.

Edit: I can’t speak for rejected/deferred students, but the letter that shows up online for accepted students is exactly the same as the one you receive in the mail.

@LAMom: yes the decision letter online is exactly the same as the one that will come in the mail.
