A lot of schools just say they want the 2010 Tax Return. No other details. Does this just mean the IRS 1040 or 1040A or 1040EZ? Does it include other stuff like 1099's or W-2s or Schedules? Some people say they didn't include 1099s. What is the guideline for including or not including those?

funnyman4: tax forms at a minimum are the 1040/a/ez form (whatever you/your parents use). The school website should tell you specifically if W2s and 1099s are needed and if the Schedules (A,B,C,D etc) for a 1040 form are also needed. If you are submitting via IDOC and CSS, once yousubmit the CSS online, you will get an email saying specifically what needs to get mailed in. If the school doesnt use IDOC, then call them Monday and ask specifically what they want. Hope this helps…

Yeah that helps. I think to be the most complete I will just send in whatever I have. Is there ever harm in sending in too many materials?

I may have been interpreting this incorrectly over the years, but to me “Tax Return” means the 1040 (or variation thereof) and all other accompanying schedules and forms that are required by the IRS when you file. Then, W2s, 1099s, etc will be requested by the school or IDOC specifically. (Actually, I can’t recall ever having to submit “Tax Returns” without a W2, now that I think about it.
