What do they look for?

Specifically a CSU like cal poly…

GPA, SAT score??

Since there’s no essays, what other methods do they use to determine an applicant??

I live in San Jose, california.

It really depends on what you want to major in - you must declare it in your application - however, GPA, SAT/ACT scores and your location tend to be the key determinants. Some majors require a portfolio. ECs have been all but irrelevant.

I would add course rigor to that list. Taking AP, Honors and advanced courses will help - even in your senior year when the grades aren’t reported on the application.

According to the common data set, the three “very important” factors for freshman admission are:

Rigor of secondary school record
Academic GPA
Standardized test scores

Scroll down to section C7 here:
http://www.calpoly.edu/~inststdy/cds/cds0607.pdf

I would add that the AP courses, assuming you get 3 or better on each test, make life easier in getting the credits you need to graduate.

True about AP classes, gotpeter. The same can be said for community college courses taken during high school. CC classes are even better in some respects:

CC classes can be completed in one semester, while AP classes take the full year.

You don’t have to take (or pass) an AP exam to get the college credit for a CC course.

A one semester CC course adds as much to your “rigor” score as a full year AP or Honors class.

My son took 8 community college classes his senior year of H.S. (He enrolled in a charter H.S. that gave him dual credit for CC courses.) This sent his “rigor” score through the roof, which he needed because of a low high school GPA. He’s starting as a freshman at Cal Poly now with 70 higher education credits (36 that count toward his degree).

Excellent point ralph4. CSM is up the street and we didn’t realize how we could take advantage of it. Serra HS never mentioned it for some reason . . .

I took Chemistry Honors and PreCalc Honors 10th grade.
AP computer Science, physics H and AP USH 11th, and right now I’m taking AP econ, and AP stat.

My 9-12 UW is about 3.4
10-12 UW is 3.5
10-12 W is 4.0

I got 790 on sat math2c, 2140 on the reasoning. Taking chem and hist in 2 weeks.

What’re my chances of getting into the engineering program at calpoly?

I think your chances are VERY good. I think you could consider Cal Poly a safety. :)

I like your chances as well although I would recommend AP Calculus.

They also look at community service and if you had a job in your major.

Grades and SAT/ACT scores count for almost everything at CSU’s especially since there is no essay or anything required. I got almost straight A’s and a 28 on the ACT, but took no honors or AP courses in high school and I still got into Cal Poly. Of course, I applied for a less competitive major, but still…

Applying Early Decision can also make a difference

I keep asking this, but how much of a difference?

lol. I am getting really paranoid now that I’m applying next week.

I was looking at the admission profile for 2009

http://www.ess.calpoly.edu/_admiss/Pdf/profile10_090409pdf.pdf

I was shocked that out of the people accepted into the college of science and math, only about 23% actually enrolled. People are just applying to SLO for fun and not even considering going there.

What are my chances at a bio major with Early decision? 3.45 gpa, 27 act, 325 community service hours, and 2 years of yearbook leadership roles(academic advisor and business manager), and waiter for 2 years(20 hours/week)?

Sorry, I’m really getting nervous.

dude Koreanboi92 i’m in the same position as you…like almost identical. So yeah wondering the samething

I went with bio and did ED the first day.=P

I’ve got similar numbers and have been told by my AVID advisor that I have a really good shot. I went ahead and applied ED, too. But then again, I applied for Graphic Comm., and anything math/science is more competitive there. But my girlfriend, people I know, and some people I met there got in without having jam-packed applications, so all hope is definitely not lost.

I really don’t know.lol. I heard of some people with like 3.4’s getting into engineering majors while some 4.0’s getting rejected.

Yeah I applied to engineering ( civil ) with a 3.59, 1370 SAT (Math+CR), early decision.

Stressin out about acceptance haha. Does anybody know if they do it on a rolling basis? I know it says by 12/15 but is it possible to get accepted any day after the deadline in late October?

I read that people started getting accepted around December 10-ish.

I applied on OCt 1, so I should hear back soon.
