What do u like and hate about Columbia?

Well, I've browsed this whole thread, and can tell you that, if I were a prospective student there, I wouldn't get a warm-fuzzy feeling at all about Columbia's school spirit or camaraderie! Does this "sniping" go on at all levels, or just between CU and Barnard students?

I think rationally certain CC and seas students get a little irked when barnard students say they go to columbia. But what you see on this board is a rational discussion not indicative of barnard-columbia relations, when interacting it doesn't really matter whether or not barnard is officially a part of columbia. There's no sniping or anything, in general students get along regardless of college affiliation. I've seen a few columbia girls roll eyes at a barnard girls but it's infrequent. I have several barnard friends, and have hung out at Barnard with only barnard students on several occasions. there's no real tension as far as i've seen. In fact that's one of the things I like about columbia - that people here (at least socially) are not school conscious, as an overall trend, I never found an air of superiority derived from going to columbia, maybe from other things, but i've had freinds visit from 'less prestigeous' schools and they too were treated no differently than other columbia students.

i'm really tired right now, but i will say that barnard does have more of a "college" feel. i noticed this most recently at their radio station spring concert. just very little red tape, security that didn't seem to give a **** if kids were openly drinking on the lawn, and bands that played right through from noon to midnight. contrast this with the bureaucratic cluster**** of a spring concert that columbia tried putting on earlier that same week, with very limited access to the student center, overpriced booking, and security guards overseeing the event for misbehavior -- it just reeked of large scale bureaucratic university paternalism. of the few courses i've taken over at barnard, it's definitely a "friendlier" experience. then again, i've also found barnard girls more likely to flake out on you at the last minute. many times over.

if you think this is bad, you should never visit the west coast. ever.

how about those arkansas girls?

i still believe in a place called hope.

Little Rock is not a bad place to be, monday-thursday. but i do miss new york when i'm gone. just going to Orgo Night last night was awesome - I had (for whatever reason) never done it as a student, and now I see what it was all about.

The band is pretty crazy.

yea orgo night was pretty awesome last night, but it's usually better (surprising I know). gotta love cumb.

so you've still never seen orgo night in the library!?

no, dude. i saw the whole thing.

ran into confidentialcoll there too, actually. little random, small-world-ish, but it was a good time all around.

oh wait. you told me this. how did i miss you at the library?

Something about the 1000 people showing up, amid pandemonium and loud, low-brow humor.

1000? subtract 800 and you'd have the right number. library staff caps it at 200 and security enforces this so to prevent damage, especially since the room was recently renovated. spec usually has something on this.

besides, alumns attending this thing stick out like sore thumbs.

that article was from 2001 or 2002.

there were definitely more than 200 people in Butler 209.

i really, really doubt it. and there've been a few more articles since then.

btw, what'd you flash to get into butler? ;)

^the picture is a little deceiving because it does not shoot the highest denisty of people which is covered by the people standing on the tables in the middle of of the picture and it also shoots only 2/3s of the room, it was over 200, but no where near a 1000, i'd give it 3-400.

"If you are a male, the male/ female ratio is strongly in your favor"

somebody mentioned this earlier. why would it be so tho? just curious and fyi i am male, lol

^when you find that many columbia guys date barnard women and consider that they are around, the male / female ratio decreases substantially. This is good if you want to find a girlfriend, get laid or enjoy hanging out with girls.

Columbia is roughly 50-50 M-F. Barnard is 100% women. The two, for all intents and purposes, share the same neighborhood, the same parties, the same campus area, and many classes too. Add the two together and you get an almost 2-1 ratio in favor of les hommes. At least, the straight ones.

^^ lol thats pretty cool. might just sway my decision.
