What do UCs like to see in their applicants?

I was just wondering other than writing an amazing essay, does having like a good variety of volunteering places, as well as 2 solid extra cirriculars boost your chances for getting in? My grades are average, im re-taking my SATs in October im hoping I can break a 2000. I dont want to go to Berkley (im still applying though), im more interested in UC Irvine, and UCSB.
I live in state, and i come from a VERY competitive school.

Any input on this?

Usually the more ECs the better, but quality does count! It is better to volunteer at a small number (1-3) of places rather than all around because it shows commitment. Also hopefully if you are volunteering at a place, you have passion for it and not doing it for college. I would focus on specific things of your taste instead of a variety. Don’t get me wrong though, if you have passion in many volunteering causes, then go for it, but just don’t do it for admissions because they can see through everyone. Good luck!
I guess for UCs stats are important like any other colleges, but they do like to know that their future students are complete book nerds.
