what do we need for orientation?

what do we need??

i plan on bringing my laptop

u should have gotten an email with 4 file attachments. the one titled ucsc orientation confirmation, it tells u what to bring. but its good to know from people who have actually gone to the orientation and what else they recommend us to bring! btw my orientation is tomorrow!

what to bring:

Any academic advising and enrollment information you received from your college and/or department

Any Advanced Placement (AP) Exam scores

Documentation of college course work you have completed

A proposed class schedule with back-up classes (refer to the advising and enrollment information you received from your college and/or department, and access the Class Search through your MyUCSC portal. Please note that some classes that currently appear to be closed in the online Class Search will re-open during summer orientation.)

List of questions for advisers, students, staff and faculty

Any unofficial course transcripts, test score results, and catalogs from any post-high school institutions

Any financial aid correspondence

Driver’s license or photo identification

Student ID # (W_ _ _ _ _ _ _) and password. This is your user name when logging on to your student portal (my.ucsc.edu). This information is needed to enroll for classes.

Optional: Your personal laptop. Though you will be assigned one of the four computer labs to enroll for classes, some students have found it useful to enroll using their personal laptop; saving time and allowing them to attend other aspects of the program.

If you bring a laptop you need to remember your CruzID and password also. I think that’s the same as for your slugmail?

My laptop is of reasonable size, but I’m concerned about carrying it around all day. Do you think it will be extra baggage or will it be worth it to bring for enrollment?

If you have a smartphone you can enroll for classes using that.

Do we absolutely need documentation of college course work you have completed? I think I’m going to have a tough time getting a transcript before my orientation but I am assuming this is just for our advisors/counselors and I remember all of the college courses I’ve taken and we already sent in an official transcript from the community colleges.

@soulkitchen: You can just print out an unofficial transcript. However, I remember taking a bunch of those items listed above back in '08 and I literally didn’t need any of them.

Someone might want to correct me if I’m wrong, but the only things you really need from that list are:

 1. Student ID/password (otherwise you can’t enroll in courses)
 2. Planned course schedule with TONS of backups (always, always, ALWAYS be prepared that your classes might get full)

Optional: Laptop (might really come in handy) and questions for advisers if you’re unsure about courses/GEs.

Thanks, that makes things a lot easier.

What if, for some reason, I never got the email with 4 attachments (or maybe it got killed in my spam filter)?

If you did not get the e-mail with the four attachments, contact the orientation office and they will resend it, that’s what I did.
